IN-DEPTH GUIDE

What you need to open a business bank account

Every US bank and fintech platform has to verify a business and the people behind it before opening an account. Applying online goes fastest with four things ready.

  • An EIN from the IRS (an uploaded SS-4 lets you start depositing; the EIN itself unlocks outgoing transfers)
  • Formation documents: Articles of Organization for an LLC, or Articles of Incorporation for a corporation
  • Ownership information for anyone who owns 25% or more of the company
  • A government-issued photo ID for each owner and signer. Sole proprietorships aren't eligible on Rho; the business needs to be a registered LLC or corporation.

Opening a business bank account for an LLC

An LLC needs its own account to keep the liability protection it was formed for. Mixing personal and business money is the most common way owners undo that separation, and it makes tax season harder than it needs to be.

A single-member LLC can usually open an account with formation documents, an EIN, and an ID; multi-member LLCs should also have the operating agreement ready, since it shows who can sign for the company. Rho's checking account has no monthly fee, no minimum balance, and accounting software that keeps books current automatically, and companies holding larger balances can add a separate Rho Business Savings Account with up to $75M in FDIC deposit insurance.

  • Single-member LLCs need formation documents, an EIN, and a government-issued ID
  • Multi-member LLCs should also provide the operating agreement
  • Look for no monthly fees, no minimum balance fees, and automatic bookkeeping integrations
  • The separate Rho Business Savings Account offers up to $75M in FDIC deposit insurance per entity through American Deposit Management Co. and its partner banks

Online business banking vs. a traditional bank

The real trade-off is physical infrastructure. An online-first platform strips out fees and paperwork; a traditional bank offers branches and cash handling a laptop can't replicate.

A business handling a lot of physical cash may genuinely be better served by a bank with a nearby branch network. A business that runs digitally gives up little going online, and picks up lower fees and faster setup in return.

  • Online-first (Rho, Mercury, Bluevine): Often $0 monthly fees, fully online account opening, limited or unavailable cash deposits, phone/chat/email support (hours vary by provider)
  • Traditional (Chase): Typically $15 to $95/mo (sometimes waivable at a minimum balance), may require a branch visit, branch and ATM cash deposits, branch hours plus phone lines by department

How to choose a business bank account

Start with the fee schedule. Monthly maintenance, ACH, wire, and minimum-balance fees are small individually and add up quietly over a year.

Then look at how deposits are actually insured: a single bank covers up to $250,000 per depositor, and platforms like Rho extend that by offering a separate savings account that spreads deposits across a network of partner banks, which is how the Rho Business Savings Account reaches up to $75M in available coverage, on top of the $250,000 in FDIC coverage on checking through Webster Bank, a division of Santander Bank, N.A.

Last, check what the account connects to, not just what it costs. Rho's checking account connects natively to QuickBooks, NetSuite, and Sage Intacct, so bookkeeping doesn't become a second job.

  • FDIC deposit insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor per ownership category
  • Rho checking deposits insured up to $250,000 through Webster Bank, a division of Santander Bank, N.A.
  • Rho Business Savings Account extends FDIC coverage up to $75M via partner banks
  • Native QuickBooks, NetSuite, and Sage Intacct integrations for automatic bookkeeping

Frequently asked questions

  • Four things: an EIN from the IRS, your formation documents (Articles of Organization for an LLC or Articles of Incorporation for a corporation), ownership details for anyone holding 25% or more of the company, and a government-issued photo ID for owners and signers. With those ready, the Rho application takes less than 10 minutes.

  • Not on its own. An EIN shows the IRS has registered your business, but banks and fintech platforms are also required to verify the company itself and the people who own it. On Rho you'll also need formation documents and a photo ID, and the business has to be an LLC or corporation; sole proprietorships aren't eligible.

  • No. An SSN identifies you as a person, not your business. Rho is built for US-incorporated LLCs and corporations, so you'll need your EIN and formation documents in addition to a photo ID.

  • It depends on how the LLC operates. A business handling a lot of physical cash may do better with a bank that has branches; a business that runs digitally should compare monthly fees, minimum balances, FDIC coverage, and accounting integrations. Rho offers LLCs a checking account with no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and no ACH or wire fees, plus the option to add a Rho Business Savings Account with up to $75M in FDIC deposit insurance.

  • No. Rho's business checking account has no monthly fee, no minimum balance, and no ACH or wire fees.

  • No, Rho is a financial technology company, not a bank. Checking account and card services are provided by Webster Bank, a division of Santander Bank, N.A., member FDIC. Savings account services are provided by American Deposit Management Co. and its partner banks.

  • It's a reporting rule, not a fee or a limit on your account. Under the Bank Secrecy Act, US financial institutions have to report cash transactions over $10,000 to FinCEN. It applies to cash, not to ACH transfers or wires, and it doesn't change what you can do with a Rho account.

  • The application takes less than 10 minutes online. Having your EIN, formation documents, ownership information, and photo ID ready before you start is what actually determines how fast it goes, at Rho or anywhere else.

  • A single bank only insures up to $250,000 per entity. Rho addresses this with a separate Rho Business Savings Account, which spreads deposits across a network of 400+ FDIC- and NCUA-insured partner banks for up to $75,000,000 in coverage per entity.

  • Switching is usually the easiest part. Our team walks you through updating payroll, vendor payments, and other recurring transfers so nothing bounces during the move, and helps you contact the vendors and platforms that pay you. Most switches run a few days of overlap between your old account and your new one, not weeks.
