Q4 2026 State of Boston Startups
Who’s writing the checks, how big they are, and how long the road to Series A has become.
Key findings
Fewer rounds, same money, and a new set of investors. This is the sharpest version of the thesis. It leans on the $8.3B flat, rounds down 22%, and 1 in 3 investors new to Boston.
Outside money leads. About 4 in 5 named-lead rounds are led from outside Massachusetts, and California leads a third. Still, 37% of investors (252 of 673) were making their first Boston deal.
The road to Series A got longer. Only 18% of the 2022 seed class reached an A, down from 40% for 2020, and the median time rose from 18 to 27.5 months.
Summary
Boston startups are raising about the same money as two years ago, but across 22% fewer rounds. Capital has held flat at roughly $8.3B while rounds fell from 830 to 650, so the average round got bigger and the path to an A got harder. Only 18% of the 2022 seed class has reached Series A, and those that did took a median of 27.5 months.
Rho and Metal teamed up to show what that means for founders, drawing on Metal’s data on Greater Boston pre-seed, seed and Series A rounds. You’ll see who is writing the checks (about 4 in 5 rounds are led from outside Massachusetts), which firms lead at each stage, what a typical round looks like, and where the growth is.
