Most failed or stalled payments trace back to one of seven causes: incorrect recipient bank details, a return by the recipient's bank, a missed scheduled-payment release, insufficient funds, compliance review on an international payment, an uncashed or undeliverable check, or an unsupported destination. Find your cause below, then follow the fix.
Did I enter the wrong recipient bank details?
What happened: The most common cause of a failed or returned payment is an error in the payment itself — the wrong vendor, an outdated account or routing number, or the wrong amount.
What to do: Verify the account and routing numbers directly with your vendor, then re-initiate the payment. If you catch the error within 30 minutes, open the payment and select Cancel Transaction in Transaction Details.
Did the recipient's bank reject or return it?
What happened: Even with correct details, the beneficiary bank can reject or return a payment. Recalls, reversals, and disputes depend on the recipient bank's cooperation and are never guaranteed. Domestic wires that fail and are returned to your Rho account incur a fee of around $20–$45, deducted from your account (as of 08/02/2026).
What to do: Confirm details with your recipient, then re-initiate. If funds haven't returned, contact Client Services to investigate.
Why didn't my scheduled payment go out?
What happened: Scheduled payments release at approximately 4 am ET on their due date. Three things stop a release:
Same-day scheduling. A payment scheduled on its own due date will not send. It shows as overdue in your Scheduled Payments tab and does not retry the next business day.
Missing approval. Payments requiring approval must be approved before 4 am ET on the due date, or they will not release.
Weekend dates (AP Bills only). Bills with a Saturday or Sunday payment date will not send and appear as overdue.
What to do: To pay today, use Make a Payment and choose Send Now. Otherwise, reschedule the payment for a future business day and approve it before 4 am ET.
Did I have enough funds?
What happened: A payment initiated without sufficient available funds will not complete.
What to do: Fund the account, then re-initiate the payment.
Is my international payment under review?
What happened: All international payments go through standard compliance checks, which can add time. Payments to recipients in certain restricted industries may be rejected or face additional screening.
What to do: Allow extra settlement time, and review Restricted Countries and International Payment Types before resending. Contact Client Services if the delay exceeds the expected settlement window.
What happened to my check?
What happened: Checks uncashed after 90 calendar days are voided automatically. Checks sent to a bad address are returned to the business address Rho has on file.
What to do: To see uncashed checks, open the all activity page on the banking dashboard and filter transaction status to Pending. If a check was voided or returned, confirm the recipient's address and reissue.
Is the destination supported?
What happened: Domestic and international wires cannot be sent to PO Box addresses — BSA regulations require a physical beneficiary address. Payments to certain countries and currencies are not supported at all.
What to do: For PO Box recipients, use a physical address, ACH, or a check. Check Restricted Countries and International Payment Types before sending internationally.
How do I check a payment's status or cancel it?
Open the payment and review its status in Transaction Details. Cancellation windows by rail:
All payments: 30 minutes after initiation, before release.
ACH: cannot cancel while Pending; recall generally possible within 2 business days after settlement.
Domestic wires: cannot be canceled once Pending and typically cannot be reversed.
International wires: cancellation can be attempted — most effective the same business day.
Recalls are free; successful recalls can take up to 4 weeks to return funds.
