Meta subtitle: Compare 11 Bank of America alternatives for small business banking, including Rho, Mercury, Chase and Wells Fargo, on fees, wires and cash.

The best Bank of America alternatives for small business banking depend on whether your business runs on cash or on software; for startups and growing companies, the Rho banking platform is one of the best options because it runs business checking, corporate cards, bill pay and expense management in one place.

Most people who look past Bank of America are reacting to three things: the monthly fee, the activity limits and the wire pricing. Business Advantage Fundamentals Banking has no monthly fee for the first 12 months, then $16 a month unless you meet one of three conditions each statement cycle.

The first 20 transactions per statement cycle are free, then $0.45 per item. Wire fees are not published at all: Bank of America lists wires as "Fee varies" and publishes no dollar amount.

If your business deposits cash every week, a branch bank may still be the right home. The rest of this guide compares 11 alternatives against Bank of America: Rho, Mercury, Bluevine, Relay, Novo, Found, Lili, Brex, Chase, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo.

Key takeaways

  • The $16 fee arrives after month 12 and depends on you qualifying. Bank of America waives it in any statement cycle where you keep a $5,000 combined average monthly balance, make $500 in new net qualified debit card purchases, or belong to the bank's business relationship program. Miss all three and the fee applies.

  • Wires are where pricing gets opaque. Bank of America does not publish a wire fee. Rho and Mercury charge $0 for domestic wires, and Bluevine, Relay, Found, Chase and U.S. Bank each publish a per-wire price.

  • Cash is a deciding factor. Bank of America, Chase, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo each include a set amount of cash deposits per cycle.

  • Running two accounts is a normal answer. Plenty of companies keep a branch account for cash and run payroll, bills and cards on a platform built for that work.

Best Bank of America alternative by what you need

If you want to stop managing a fee waiver and stop guessing at wire costs, start with Rho. If your needs center on cash, interest, multiple accounts or bookkeeping, a different provider fits better, and the table below says which.

What you needStart withWhy

Fees are monthly list prices from each provider's own site as of October 22, 2026. Paid tiers are shown in parentheses. If your money moves by ACH, wire and card, compare the monthly fee and domestic wire columns first. If you deposit cash every week, start with the cash and branches column instead.

Why businesses look for Bank of America alternatives

Bank of America gives a business a familiar name, in-person financial centers and Zelle for business. Friction shows up as the business changes shape.

The free year ends. Business Advantage Fundamentals Banking charges no monthly fee for the first 12 months, then $16 a month.

After that you keep the fee off by holding a $5,000 combined average monthly balance in eligible linked business deposit accounts, spending $500 in new net qualified purchases on a Bank of America business debit card, or joining the bank's business relationship program. Each one is a monthly task.

Volume limits are built for a storefront. The account includes 20 transactions per statement cycle, then charges $0.45 per item. Cash is free up to $5,000 per cycle, then $0.30 per $100. A business that writes and deposits a lot of paper can outgrow that.

Wire pricing is not on the page. Bank of America's fee schedule lists wires as "Fee varies" and publishes no dollar amount.

If you send wires monthly, you cannot price that line before you open the account.

The higher tier costs more. Business Advantage Relationship Banking is $29.95 a month, waived with a $15,000 combined average monthly balance or the bank's business relationship program. It raises the free transaction count to 500 and the free cash limit to $20,000 per cycle.

If your money moves mostly by ACH, wire and card, you are paying for branch infrastructure you rarely use.

  • Choose Mercury if you want a $0 account with $0 domestic wires and are comfortable without cash deposits.

  • Choose Bluevine if you keep larger balances in checking and want them to earn interest.

  • Choose Relay if you need many checking accounts, and you want cash deposits at AllPoint ATMs for $0.

  • Choose Novo if you want a no-fee account with budgeting buckets and no cash needs.

  • Choose Lili if you want bookkeeping and tax tools on a paid plan, or Found if you want a $0 account with sub-accounts.

  • Choose Brex if you are a funded startup that wants cards and spend control first.

Fees to watch beyond the monthly fee

The monthly fee is the number everyone compares. These three can cost more over a year.

  • Waiver conditions that reset every period. Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo and Bluevine's paid tiers all charge their fee in any period where you miss the condition. Check how often your balance dips before you count on a waiver.

  • Per-wire pricing. Traditional banks charge $25 to $40 per outgoing domestic wire where they publish a price, and Bank of America does not publish one. A few vendor payments a month can cost more than the monthly fee you are trying to avoid.

  • Cash and paper overages. Bank of America, Chase, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo each include a set amount of cash and paper activity per cycle, then charge per item or per $100.

When to stay with Bank of America

Leaving Bank of America is not always the right move.

  • You use Zelle for business. Bank of America lists Zelle for your business on its Business Advantage checking page. If Zelle is central to how customers pay you, keep that account open while you move everything else.

  • You already meet a waiver. If you hold a $5,000 combined average monthly balance or belong to the bank's business relationship program, the $16 fee may never apply to you.

  • You deposit cash at a branch. Bank of America includes the first $5,000 in cash per statement cycle at no fee, then charges $0.30 per $100.

  • You have a lending relationship. If you have a loan or line of credit with Bank of America, read its terms before moving your operating account, since some lenders tie pricing or covenants to deposits.

Many businesses keep Bank of America for cash and lending and move everything else.

How to switch from Bank of America

Switching takes planning more than paperwork. Run both accounts side by side until every payment has moved.

  1. Open the new account first. Have your EIN, formation documents and owner information ready.

  2. List every recurring payment and deposit. Payroll, vendor ACH debits, card autopays, customer payment instructions and software subscriptions.

  3. Move incoming money, then outgoing. Update customer payment details and payment processor payouts first, then vendors and payroll.

  4. Leave a buffer in Bank of America. Keep enough to cover stragglers through at least one full statement cycle, and remember the $16 fee applies in any cycle you miss a waiver once the first 12 months have passed.

  5. Close the Bank of America account once a full cycle passes with no activity.

The step-by-step guide on how to switch business bank accounts includes a full checklist.

If your company runs on ACH, wires and cards, Rho gives you business checking with no monthly fees, $0 domestic ACH and wires, and corporate cards with free bill pay on the same platform. Rho serves US-incorporated businesses, so have your EIN letter, formation documents and owner details ready. Open a Rho account and keep Bank of America open while you move payments over.

FAQs

It depends on how your business moves money. For startups and growing companies that pay by ACH, wire and card, Rho is one of the best options, with no monthly fees, $0 domestic ACH and wires, and corporate cards on the same platform. Mercury, Bluevine, Relay, Novo, Found, Lili and Brex work through partner banks, and Chase, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo take cash at branches.

Business Advantage Fundamentals Banking has no monthly fee for the first 12 months, then $16 a month. After that you avoid the fee in any statement cycle by keeping a $5,000 combined average monthly balance in eligible linked business deposit accounts, making at least $500 in new net qualified purchases on a Bank of America business debit card, or belonging to the bank's business relationship program. Rho has no monthly fee to waive.

It depends on what you do most. For ACH, wires and cards, a platform such as Rho or Mercury keeps fees low. For regular cash deposits, a branch bank such as Chase, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo or Bank of America is the practical choice. For interest on balances, look at Bluevine or Found.

Both charge a monthly fee you can waive. Wells Fargo Initiate Business Checking is $15 a month and includes 100 free transactions per fee period. Bank of America Business Advantage Fundamentals is $0 for 12 months, then $16, and includes 20 free transactions. Both include the first $5,000 in cash per cycle at no fee, then $0.30 per $100.

Chase Business Complete Banking is $15 a month, waived with one of several conditions, and publishes its outgoing domestic wire price at $25 online or $35 in a branch. Bank of America is $16 a month after the first 12 months and does not publish a wire fee. Chase lists more than 5,000 branches, and both list Zelle. The better fit depends on where your branches and cash deposits are.

The common friction points are the $16 monthly fee after the first 12 months, the 20-transaction limit before $0.45 per item applies, cash fees of $0.30 per $100 beyond $5,000 per cycle, and wire fees that are listed only as "Fee varies." Businesses that move money mostly by ACH, wire and card may prefer a platform with published pricing.

Bank of America lists a $5,000 combined average monthly balance in eligible linked business deposit accounts as one of three ways to avoid the $16 fee after the first 12 months. The other two are $500 in new net qualified debit card purchases and membership in the bank's business relationship program. Rho has no minimum-balance fees on business checking.

No. Rho is a banking platform, not a bank. Checking and card services are provided by partner banks, which are listed in the disclosures at the end of this article.

Rho and Mercury both charge $0 for outgoing domestic wires. Relay charges $8 on Starter and $5 on its paid plans, Bluevine charges $7.50 to $15 by plan, Found charges $15 or $10 on Pro, and Chase and U.S. Bank publish per-wire prices of $25 to $40. Bank of America lists wire fees as "Fee varies."

US-incorporated LLCs that pay by ACH, wire and card: Rho is one of the best options, with no monthly fees and $0 domestic ACH and wires. For cash-heavy LLCs, a branch bank such as Chase, U.S. Bank or Wells Fargo is the practical choice.
